Funny you mentioned the funeral request for "Brokedown", as I have mentioned that to my wife as well...I think it's the perfect, ultimate 'farewel" song...what's amazing to me is that I love that song with all my heart and it moves me deeply (especially when played and sung well), but I'm not at all a religious person. Is that weird? The song seems to have obvious religious overtones, but to me it's more spiritual in nature. It's just lovely, that much I know...and the metaphor for the body being the "brokedown palace" that we all eventually have to leave behind seems one of the truest things ever written. (Thanks, R. Hunter)

As for the other songs that move me as much, I always say that I have a "holy Trinity" of Dead tunes (again, odd given my agnostic nature that I use that term). They are:

Those songs are special to me in a way words can't really describe.

p.s. Another fine "Brokedown" is from the Ravenspace show of 4/19/82....a picture perfect rendition marred only by Bobby breaking in at one point to warn a fan to "be careful up there"...I guess some guy was climbing on something he shouldn't have been, but I wish Bobby hadn't decided to admonish him mid-tune...still, it's a very brief moment, and Jerry doesn't break stride and's an outstandingly beautiful version, especially with Brent's harmonies thrown in.

Well my friend i can well and truly identify. I was raised in a pretty religious home and when I left much of the formal part stayed there. I am however a deeply spiritual person and this song and the others you mentioned stir my soul.

"Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul"

That line alone is such a beautiful thing. Mr.Hunter could have layed his pen down after this song. Thank God he didn't though!!
